What the labels mean

You are about to spend real money on an animal you have not put your hands on. The least a marketplace owes you is a straight answer about where every claim on the page came from. This is that answer.

The one thing to know first

OpenPasture does not inspect animals. We have not visited the ranch, handled the livestock, examined a health document, or confirmed that anyone is who they say they are. There is no verification badge on this marketplace because there is no verification process behind one, and a badge without a process is worse than nothing — it borrows your trust and gives you no protection in return.

What we can do is tell you, line by line, whether something was typed by the seller or observed by us. That is what the labels do.

The six labels

system record: OpenPasture observed this itself — a completed sale, a measured reply time, a stored record. Not something anyone typed into an advert.
seller provided: The seller entered or uploaded this. It may be entirely true. OpenPasture has not checked it.
review pending: Submitted for review. No one at OpenPasture has looked at it yet.
reviewed: A person at OpenPasture looked at this and recorded what they found.
expired: This was evidence once. It is more than 365 days old, so it is shown as expired rather than counted.
not provided: Absent. Shown on purpose — knowing that something is missing is worth as much as knowing what is there.

Seller levels

Three levels, and every one of them is earned by doing something useful. None can be bought, none reflects popularity, and none is awarded by a person — the server works them out from stored records, so a seller cannot assert one from a browser. A seller with no levels is very often a good seller who is new.

Profile Complete

This seller filled in who they are and where they are, and has published at least one listing.

A stated location
A short description of the operation
At least one published listing

Responsive Seller

This seller answers buyers, measured by OpenPasture rather than claimed.

At least 3 buyer conversations answered
Median first reply within 24 hours
No buyer left unanswered for more than 7 days

Established Seller

This seller has finished sales on OpenPasture, recently, without unresolved complaints.

At least 3 completed OpenPasture sales
At least one completed in the last 180 days
No unresolved issue older than 14 days

Reply speed is shown as a band, never a percentage, and only once a seller has answered at least 3 buyers. A seller who has answered one buyer quickly has not proven anything, and printing “100%” over that would be a lie told with a number.

Reporting something

Every listing and every person on this marketplace can be reported. You get a reference number, we keep a copy of the listing exactly as it looked when you reported it — editing it afterwards changes nothing — and a person reads it. You are told the outcome.

What we will not do is decide who is right about an animal. We were not there. OpenPasture records what happened, can remove a listing or limit an account, and keeps the evidence — it does not arbitrate a livestock dispute, hold anyone’s money, or guarantee a sale. If you believe livestock has been stolen, call your brand inspector or sheriff; that is not a job for a website.

Blocking

Blocking someone takes effect immediately and does not wait for us. They cannot message you or make offers on your listings — on that advert or any other — and they are not told. Blocking is not reporting: a block protects you, a report is how everybody else gets protected. Do both when both apply.

These criteria are generated from the same code that applies them, so this page cannot fall out of step with the marketplace.
